Teaching Letter of Recommendation
Soares Leadership Award Nomination of Ariane Herne
for
Outstanding Secondary Education Intern
Nominated by Dr. Jane M. Dorian, Intern Supervisor (Obtained 2019)
Ariane Herne is an intern in the Business and Technology Department at the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering (AITE) in Stamford, CT. She is an exemplary student who has done superlative work over the past year in every Portfolio assignment. She has a deep commitment to teaching and learning and has an exceptional ability to research the professional standards and best practices of her content discipline.
Her many efforts over the year show her passion for making a difference in the education of the students in her school. When one teacher in her department was out on leave due to illness, the principal asked Ariane to take over his program. Ariane found herself teaching courses titled “Foundations of Information Technology” for 86 students! She taught the classes with great diligence and intense preparation, helping students with IEPs, meeting with counselors, and communicating to parents. She redesigned the course to include hands on applications to make the course more interesting to students. In addition, she prepared an innovative 4-part PowerPoint final exam that comprised all the software programs students had learned. Each class had different numbers in the problems to be solved, and this extra preparation and work upheld the integrity of the exam.
Ariane has a strong background in finance and international business, so she knows the importance of global awareness. Thus, she launched current events presentations in all classes. She provided teachers for whom she subbed access to her technological work in a collaborative spirit and she kept teachers informed of how each day went when she was the substitute. For students in the Business and Technology department, she brought in speakers from Stamford University, Wake Forest, and Redwall Analytics/NYU to present on Artificial Intelligence and other aspects of Information Technology. She also searched for videos showcasing young teenage entrepreneurs who were making a difference in the world with innovations in harnessing wind power and innovations in video game technology. By showing these videos to many classes, Ariane was using multiple platforms to stimulate high school students’ imaginations and inspire them.
Likewise, when the Corona virus epidemic first started, Ariane designed a PowerPoint presentation for the school outlining possible financial and economic effects, with references to past crises in our country’s history. She shared this important presentation with staff and students and made it available for anyone to view or use.
Though Ariane has myriad accomplishments to be proud of, she told me that she is most proud when she finds ways to overcome individual students’ fears about performance and failure by working with them one-on-one to achieve success academically. She is also doing an independent study project to learn the new technology and coding that many firms require. She says that this way she can offer future students the skills that industries want employees to have: business finance concepts and technology.
When I visited Ariane’s school as her supervisor, I saw the great respect students have for her and I listened to the principal’s summation of her intern, “I would hire her in a minute!” Ariane is dedicated, hard working, intelligent, passionate, kind, generous, innovative, and caring. She possesses a depth of knowledge rarely seen in interns and she has a magnificent worldview, having grown up in Europe and in turn, speaks three languages. Ariane Herne is the best of the best and I am honored to be nominating her as Outstanding Secondary School Intern at the University of Bridgeport for a 2020 Soares Leadership Award.

Ariane was a student teacher that I supervised at the University of Bridgeport as she competed her Master’s Degree. In my many years of teaching and supervising, I have never encountered a more hard working, knowledgeable and dedicated student teacher. Ariane’s work ethic is extraordinary.
Ariane possesses teaching skills far ahead of most student teachers. She has excellent class management skills and is highly respected by her students. Her lesson plans represent rigorous learning and outcomes for her students. She is extremely intuitive about how students learn.
What struck me most about Ariane is that after teaching several lessons she quickly figured out what methods captured her students’ interest and helped them learn. She used her vast knowledge of subject matter, role-playing, educational games and her enthusiasm and knowledge to capture students’ interest. Ariane was successfully able to straddle both the virtual and “in class” forums and at the same time leading online students to a 99% daily attendance.
Ariane’s vast background brought real life experiences to her lessons. She is a native speaker of English, French and Italian and a fluent speaker of Spanish. Her maturity and professionalism gave her self-confidence and a presence in front of the class. After a suggestion made in one of my observations, she quickly mastered questioning techniques that caused all students to think before answering a question. Her observations by her cooperating teacher were excellent.
Ariane interacted professionally with her colleagues and drew on their experience to help improve her teaching. She received excellent ratings by her cooperating teacher. Because of teacher absences due to Covid, Ariane stepped in to help and added a sixth class to her already full load of five different classes including honors classes; namely, Principles of Finance, Business Law, Personal Finance, Career Pathways and Information Technology.
Ariane is ready to step right into a classroom. She will work collegiately with teachers and administrators. She is eager to learn and implement the knowledge she has acquired.
I am proud of Ariane’s success and I am sure that you will be happy to have her as a member of your staff.
I will be happy to speak with you further regarding Ariane. You may reach me at 203-464-2185.

My Teaching Philosophy
At the root of my teaching philosophy is the belief that my success as a teacher is to be measured in the intrinsic motivation of my students. In order to achieve that I would want to share my experience, not only to impart knowledge, but also to teach my students the resilience and ability to do what needs to be done, without influence from other people or situations by finding the reasons and strength to complete a task, even when challenging, even when failure closes in, without giving up.
To achieve this I believe that 5 essential elements need to take place:
First, my aim to stimulate the desire to learn. I would want to open students’ horizons by making any lesson relevant to the talents and skills that students will need to perform efficiently in the world of tomorrow with a particular focus on being an open-minded member of our global society.
Second, I believe in setting high expectations for students to build resilience and adaptability by showing them they are capable of doing much more than they thought they could achieve. I believe the corporate world does not need further specialists and it is important to teach students that their most important asset is to be adaptable and flexible to do anything that will be needed in our future world. Education must adapt to service the new needs of industry.
Third, I believe that it is critical to give individualized time to each student in order to enable each student to develop their singular talent. All students have talents, but they are not always able to identify them. By giving each child personalized attention and support, the teacher can aid in the maturity process to understand what the student needs to achieve to the greatest of his or her ability.
Fourth, I believe in leveraging new technologies to assist in these aims is critical and should be at the forefront of any teaching lesson plan. Teachers must be held to high technological standards and should be trained accordingly so they can assist students to manage innovation, and carve out a function for themselves.
Fifth, I believe that making mistakes should be celebrated. It is essential to learn to fail because learning from mistakes is a skill that needs to be practiced. Too many students are petrified for fear of failure. In this, goals remain unattainable. Instead, goals should be measured to the optimal level of difficulty (with more individually measurable goals). By dividing a larger goal into a series of smaller measurable tasks, I can show students that they can afford to fail and work harder to achieve small steps towards the greater goal.
I bring an open and respectful mind, a positive view and very high expectations. I believe in acting as a guide. By not imposing but suggesting, and by encouraging rather than directing, I am hoping that I can ultimately inspire exchange and growth in a warm and welcoming environment.
Yale Letters of Recommendation

To whom it may concern:
I am writing to you on behalf of Ariane marzal, a second year student here at the Yale School of Management. Ariane has been enrolled in my International Marketing course the past semester. International Marketing is a seminar course taken as a send-year elective. This year the 18 students in the class spent a great deal of time discussing a variety of important issues relevant to international marketing. Ariane was always actively involved in these discussions, both in and outside of class. Consequently, I have come to know her quite well during this semester. Ariane impressed me in terms of her intelligence, insight, maturity and professionalism.
Although I can only speak to Ariane's Marketing abilities, she possesses excellent instincts. Her insight with respect to international issues and overall corporate strategy impressed throughout the semester. As evidence, Ariane worked in a group of three students to analyze a proposed entry into the Turkish solar energy photovoltaic market. The group's analysis and Ariane's presentation was first-rate. I can't imagine Ariane being anything less than a simply outstanding hire for anyone interested in a young, thinking person.
In conclusion, I have taught for almost ten years now in graduate programs at Cornell University and Yale University. In terms of raw intelligence, maturity, the ability to get to the heart of a marketing issue, and professionalism, I would consider Ariane among the very best of a select set of these students - perhaps in the top 5%.
This conclusion comes from her comments in class, her case analyses, group work, and a number of discussions that we have had outside of class. I recommend her to you without reservation.
Sincerely,
William P. Putsis, Jr.

To whom it may concern:
I am writing to you on behalf of Ariane Marzal who is a second year student at the Yale School of Management.
I have known Ariane since last Spring when she took Financial Management, which is the first-year required core course in Finance that I teach in the School of management. Subsequently, she was in my International Finance class, a second year elective in the MPPM Program. The course covered the theoretical aspects of International Finance with a strong emphasis on applications. Topics included the working of foreign exchange markets, forward contracts, currency futures and options, swaps, the management of currency risk through hedging, and the evaluation of international investment projects, including the treatment of political risks. Throughout the course students were required to work in teams to prepare written case reports and give presentations advising management on international investment and financing decisions. Her performance in the class convinced me that Ariane has a good understanding of these conceptually difficult topics.
At the beginning of the Spring term 1995, Ariane approached me to oversee her independent study on the developments of project finance. The SOM curriculum provides the opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge in an area of their personal interest under faculty supervision. Although not in need of credits for the purpose of graduation, Ariane chose to perform this study for her personal edification. Clearly attracted by the sector, her aim was to identify the factors that have contributed to the recent growth in project financing, provide an analysis of the risks that participants in the market face, and isolate the prospects and hurdles for a continuation of its growth in the future. With little guidance on my part, Ariane successfully accomplished this difficult task. Her analysis not only demonstrates her analytical skills and comprehension of complex financial structures, but also shows her self-motivation and her ability to work independently.

I would like to specialize in bridging the gap between Technology, Business and Finance such that the high school graduates of tomorrow are equipped with the tools that the industry needs to operate in our modern technologically connected environment. To achieve this, I have invested in my education to learn to use Python in a financial context. I look forward to investing myself fully in the educational sector and leverage my contacts in the business and financial world to provide students with a real-life understanding of the demands of the business and finance industry.
